Our dogs used to be able to go for long periods of time but they are getting old and unable to control bodily fluids for as long. We generally try to keep it to a few hours but they have gone some pretty long days (8-9 hours, maybe?) on some occasions. It took them no time to adapt to trailer life. I think they like it more than they did our previous home. They seem to like the smaller space, maybe? We didn't leave the alone for long periods right away. We gave them several weeks (maybe even a month?) to adjust to the new home. But, again, their crate has always been their comfort zone (well, that and our bed) so we didn't have any initial issues.

We've taken them on some trails in state and national parks but it depends on the park. In Yellowstone and Tetons, we didn't take them on the trail just because of other wildlife (and, I'm not even sure they allow dogs on the trails in those parks.)

Our dogs despise water so I'm not sure about the swimming. I know I've seen some dogs in the water along our travels but it depends on the park.

And, thanks for the compliments on Emerson. She is napping now but I've gotten used to holding her while she feeds and typing on the computer with one hand. :-) Chris would love it if I could learn how to clean with one hand while holding her but I'll take my time on getting around to that skill. :-)

Wow Lani! Less than 20 minutes on your reply. That's impressive. Is your new baby napping? She's beautiful in your photos by the way. I just read your Quebec city post and think we may have been there at the same time. Back to dogs though... How long do you find you can leave them alone in the Trailer? My dog can go 12 hours at home, but I fear the trailer maybe too much for him. Did it take them much time to adapt? Also, when you are visiting national parks, do you take your dogs on trails? Fianally, when you stay at parks with beaches or swimming of any kind, do they allow dogs in the water? Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Hi Brandon,

So sorry for the delay. I kept forgetting to ask Chris this question. We purchased the:

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks!

Hi Willow,

Our dogs are crate trained so often times they stay in the Airstream in their crate while we go into town or to any place where taking dogs would be difficult. They don't mind the crate (as den animals they probably find it cozy.) We always make sure the temperature is appropriate (heat, air, windows, etc.) If your dog is a barker, it could pose problems in some parks--depending on the rules of the park. So far, we've never had any problems but some parks are strict about that.

Also, it's also important to have vaccination paperwork as many parks require proof of vaccination. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Hi Lani, I really enjoy your site and detailed narrative of your lives on the road, but I was wondering about your dogs, In some of your posts you mention enjoying parks with dog play areas, but what do you do with them when you leave the Airstream for the day? Can they be left alone for long periods of time in the trailer? Do they require anything special for this? I would appreciate any information you can provide, as we are just starting our RV life, and are at a loss about what to do with our dog when we want to canoe or even have a meal out.

Manisha, no we didn't have any croissants. :( But, it was a great trip and Emerson seems to love her blanket time in the park...at least for a few minutes. She definitely needs breaks from her carseat. I'd need a break too if I had to sit backwards and couldn't really see out the window. :)

Ha! Thanks for the comment Ben! I confess to being a "lurker" of several blogs myself.

Ugh! the list of rules are the worst! We learned all about that this summer!

Manisha, she is smiling all the time now and it's so much fun! She and I go out at least once a day for walks if weather allows. It's a nice break for both of us.

People who read, but never repond are called "lurkers." It's scary the first time you post. There's no telling how many people are going to read your comment and if you say something stupid, you'll be criticized in front of the whole universe!

Great story Lani. My wife and I never plan our trips. We just have a general destination in mind; never reservations. I love boondocking, and I've decided that RV parks are the worst part of RVing. I hate it when they present you with a multipage list of rules :(

Have I said too much? I think I'll go now...
