My Buddy

Posted by on February 20, 2011

Last week was a difficult week for our family.  Our dog, Buddy, had recently been diagnosed with cancer and underwent surgery on Monday to remove part of a tumor on his leg.  We brought him home Monday evening but unfortunately things took a turn for the worse and he passed away early Tuesday morning. Chris and I were with him through the night and we held him during his last moments.  While we know Buddy is at peace now, it was difficult to say goodbye.

Buddy became a member of our family 7 years ago when we adopted him from the Italian Greyhound Rescue organization. He was an incredibly nervous dog but wanted nothing more than a warm body to curl up next to. He was happiest in the Airstream, because it meant we were always close by. And, he definitely lived a life of adventure his last few years! Chris put it best by saying, “Although he managed to add a pinch of crazy to our lives sometimes, he also gave us a heaping cup of happiness that will be hard to replace.”

Rest in peace, Buddy. We miss you.

I’m so very sorry to hear about Buddy.

The true testament to how wonderful our pets are is that we know going into it that it won’t end well, yet we continue to bring them into our lives anyway.

My Wife and I adopted two retired racing greyhounds, Luke (9) and Leia (3) after our 18 year old cocker spaniel, Reggie, passed away. About a month before Reggie passed, we met a female greyhound and her owner at one of Reggie’s vet appointments. She was so kind and gentle with Reggie. He really liked her.. We took it as a sign that, that was who Reggie wanted us to adopt next.

A few months after Reggie passed we found and adopted Luke. He is epileptic and was mistreated by his current owner. She simply had too many dogs and could not take care of him. We went to a greyhound meet and greet with no intention of adopting a dog that day. As soon as we met him, we realized he is a big loveable sweetheart of a dog and he needed a home that could care for his special needs. So we took him home to meet the kitties.

After a few months with Luke we decided he needed a friend so we found Leia on the Greyhound rescue adoption site. As soon as they met you could tell right away they were best buddies. They love to hang out together and share the couch (no room for me lol).

    The rest is history.

I’m sure that soon enough you will find another furry companion to fill your heart!

Buddy would want it that way!

I’m really sorry for your loss. We also lost our dog to cancer when our daughter was young. Glad that you had such a loving dog and that he such a great family too.

Sorry to hear about buddy, always heart breaking to loose those little furry family members. Sounds like buddy had an ideal life post racing days, and hopefully there’s some solace to you that you were able to give that to him.

I’m sorry about Buddy — I met him in Swanzey — the day I stopped to visit –I like to think that old saying ” That all Dog’s go to Heaven”—– Frankie

    So sorry….

The pictures brought a tear to my eye – Buddy was a sweet dog who just wanted to be near someone. I know AJ wishes he had the Bud to cuddle with….they were always wound around each other in their crate! Buddy had a great home and life…..

So sorry. What a pretty, sweet boy. You’re right about the Airstream; our dogs wouldn’t completely relax until the whole pack was jammed inside, with them blocking the door.

Thank you, everyone, for your kind words. It means a lot to us.

I’m so sorry, it’s heartbreaking. What’s interesting to me is how almost every couple I know lost a pet within the first year of their child’s life. We were talking about it the other day, and saying maybe they (the pets) just know that now we will be OK without them, like they brought us to this place in our lives, the job’s done, so now they can go. Maybe that’s just mystical nonsense, but it sure brought me a lot of peace at the time so I wanted to pass it along. RIP Buddy.

I follow you on Twitter @Bev1978; just read your blog entry on your beautiful dog, Buddy. How it touches my heart on this stormy day in Texas. We lost one of our beautiful Dachshund brothers 3 days ago- he was only 4 years old. We are heartbroken- they do take a little piece of our hearts when they leave us, but oh, the joy & fun they give. Hugs to you.
